How can industrial design add value to your product development process?

Industrial designers shape the way a product comes into existence.

When good industrial design is executed properly the process can enable you to leverage your products potential, increase sales and disrupt the marketplace in a positive and captivating way.

So how does this work and why do I need an industrial design team on board?

Here at Papa Bravo we don’t just create pretty pictures. We’ve had our fair share of extraordinarily brilliant, rough and ready prototypes to date. We’ve helped many well known brands from start ups, and inventors to large scale companies transform their ideas into commercially viable and successful products.

Every time we are approached with the next big idea or a prototype which solves a common everyday problem we always ask ourselves three things:

  • Is this the best way of solving the problem. For example, is this the best solutions or is there a more efficient way of achieving the same result.

  • Who is this aimed at, who will use it and how is it going to be used. What is the context of the product and the use case scenario.

  • Are there any other advantages to this product solution which have not been thought about before. Could it open up market potential elsewhere for a different set of users perhaps.

The key to successful industrial design is not purely based around the look and feel of the product. Sure, these are important factors but identifying key trends and areas for opportunity within the competitive landscape are equally so. As we produce our concepts and explore different ideas we are then better placed to judge market fit and analyse our concepts appeal against their target market. We can then explore innovative ways to influence the industrial design to give our concepts the edge over their competitors.

Once these components are understood we can then evaluate how the product works and begin to apply our industrial design process.

Creating a strong bond and striking the right balance between how the product functions and how the product looks and feels is where industrial design can have the largest impact.

Applying industrial design in this way adds the most value and contributes to a far greater product experience overall.
