Design Interns Join Us

By Alex 17-05-2022

Internships

During the last few months, we’ve had a number of design internships join us in our South Wales office undertaking a number of different projects as part of our internship programme. We take a look through some of the work produced….

internships

Recently, we’ve played host to a number of design internships in our South Wales design office, offering our experience week to those looking to gain some familiarity of working in a commercial design engineering environment. For those looking to explore a future career in design, it can be very difficult to reflect upon where you may end up once you’ve spent time in further education or training through an apprenticeship scheme. The knowledge which can be gained through being immersed within a commercial design studio can sometimes be taken for granted, but with clients in and out the door and the day to day business aspect of design being clearly visible, a real insight into the design industry can be gained just by being around the office.

We recently welcomed three design interns looking for that experience who wanted to develop their own design skills. Through our intern programme we look to provide an insight into each area of our business, allowing those with us to experience design as it moves from the concept to manufacture stages. With our designer engineers holding their own particular skill sets, we are able to collectively provide a wide spanning opportunity for our interns to understand how design operates.

Ceirion, one of our most recent interns joined us to gain a further understanding of CAD software to develop his skills in preparation for his GCSE product design project. Through his initial research into current developments in the contactless payment technology, he recognised an opportunity to simplify the process of use by incorporating a payment card into a phone casing. Initially he spent time with one of our concept designers looking at how to effectively communicate his ideas across whilst getting to grips with digital drawing techniques through practicing on our graphic tablet and software drawing tools. He was then able to work with one of our design engineers to take the concept through to CAD software, generating a fully formed 3D computer model.

We were also pleased to welcome Shannon within the last couple of months to our office for a week where she worked on a college project based upon improving the guitar capo design. As a guitarist herself, she had first hand experience of using the products available on the market, and wanted to improve the usability and appearence of them as well as to encorporate a holding area for a plectrum. Again through working with our design team drawing upon the different skills within the office to develop and evaluate concepts, she was able to gain valuable feedback and guidance during the project, leading to a final solution.

We’re really happy with the outcome of each project, and glad to see how the experience of operating in a working design studio can have a real impact upon the confidence and enthusiasm of those interning with us. We wish them the best of luck in their future professional careers!
